Novice Lakers take Gold, Tyke and Peewee Lakers claim Silver, and Peterborough wins back the rights to the Classic Cup

May 26th , 2019
(Peterborough, ON) — The 34th Annual STRINGKING Laker Classic Tournament wrapped up on Sunday afternoon at the Peterborough Memorial Centre with three Peterborough teams playing for championship titles in the Tyke, Novice and Peewee Divisions.

The Tyke Lakers saw mixed levels of competition in the round robin, but with a 2-2 record were able to advance to the semi-final against Toronto Beaches. They played strong in the morning and advanced to the final, where they then met a very strong opponent in Burlington who were able to claim the Gold.

In the Novice Division our Lakers team was dominant, going undefeated in the round robin. After a feisty matchup in the semifinal against Clarington, goaltender Trent Tremblay stood tall between the pipes in the final as the Novice Lakers capped off the weekend with a 9-0 shutout win versus Halton Hills to claim Gold.

The Peewee Lakers were also strong in their Division and undefeated in round robin play. After a dominating win in the quarter final and a 4-2 win in the semifinal against Toronto Beaches, the final against Brampton was a close battle that went back and forth but the Excelsiors were able to squeak out a 5-3 win to claim Gold.

The Bantam Lakers faced stiff competition in their pool and were unable to advance to playoff action. And although the Midget roster fought their way into a semifinal against Nepean, they were unable to defeat the Knights who went on to win Gold for the division.

Throughout the weekend teams also represented their local organization in battling for “The Classic Cup”, awarded to the organization with the most combined points over the course of all games in the tournament. With four teams advancing to playoffs and three teams in Medal finals, the Peterborough Minor Lacrosse Association Lakers were able to claim the Classic Cup for 2019. Congratulations to our local players on this great result!
