The Nexicom Tyke 1 Peterborough Lakers traveled to Brampton over the weekend (May 31 – June 2) to participate in the 27th Annual John “Gus” McCauley Memorial Lacrosse Tournament.  Following an undefeated streak through the preliminary round and semi-finals, the Lakers finished a perfect weekend off with a 5-3 victory over the Whitby Warriors in the finals.

The Lakers got things started on Friday evening with a commanding 18-3 win over Six Nations, then faced some tough competition on Saturday morning where a pair of late goals sealed an 8-7 win over Clarington.  Saturday afternoon saw the Lakers roll past the host Excelsiors with a 14-8 win and in the evening they closed out the preliminary round with an 8-1 victory over Oakville.

Sunday morning’s semi-final saw a rematch against Oakville with the game being played on the turf at the historic Brampton Memorial Arena. The Lakers were a little slow to get going and the game remained tight until the third when the Lakers finally opened things up and cruised to a 7-4 win.

The Lakers rode the momentum from their 5 straight victories into the finals against Zone rivals Whitby. While the Lakers offence had been on display for most of the tournament, the 5-3 championship win was a testament of their disciplined defence and strong goaltending. Following the victory, goaltender Eddie Post was awarded the player of the game for his exceptional play between the pipes.

Next up for the Lakers is a home and home matchup with the Whitby Warriors, that will see the Lakers head to Whitby on Thursday (June 6) before playing host to the Warriors next Monday (June 10) at the Evinrude.
