The 33rd Annual STRINGKING Laker Classic Tournament wrapped up on Sunday afternoon at the Peterborough Memorial Centre with three Peterborough teams playing for championship titles in the Tyke, Peewee and Midget Divisions. All Championship games throughout the day were close fought battles concluding with the Midget Final in which the Lakers played Windsor in a strong defensive battle. It took overtime to decide a winner and the scoring chances went back and forth until a late drive by #19 Tommy Collins gave the Lakers a thrilling 3-2 victory and the Championship. Peterborough’s Tyke team fell behind early in their Championship game versus Whitby, and although they battled back the team was unable to convert on several late chances and lost by a score of 5-4. The Peewee Lakers faced a strong Orangeville roster and pulled ahead 3-2 early in the third but were unable to hold on as Orangeville fought back to win 5-3. The Novice and Bantam Lakers teams faced stiff competition in their respective pools and were unable to advance to playoff action. And our Paperweight Lakers were able to experience their first Laker Classic. Throughout the weekend teams also represented their local organization in battling for “The Classic Cup”, awarded to the organization with the most combined points over the course of all games in the tournament. With Championship wins in the Novice, Peewee and Bantam divisions, the Orangeville Northmen were able claim the Classic Cup for 2018. Congratulations Orangeville.
