The start of the year could not have gone better for the Peterborough Lakers Bantam Girls Lacrosse team.  After winning all three local zone games, the bantam girls took their talents to Kitchener-Waterloo to participate in the KW Lax Angels lacrosse tournament.  The Bantam division was able to attract most the top girls program in Ontario which would be a good test for this team that included many returning players and two true rookies who were playing in their first lacrosse season.

The Bantam Lakers started the tournament Friday night strong and out matched Wallaceburg beating them 12-0.  On Saturday, the girls continued their top tier play by beating Whitby Warriors 2 and KW Braves 10-0 and 5-1 respectively, setting the table for a rematch for Sunday’s final verse the KW Braves.  The final game started slow for the Lakers (8 of the 15 players also played 2 field lacrosse games later Saturday afternoon) and the Braves came to avenge the prior day’s loss. The Lakers struggled through the first period, relying heavily on their goalie and were lucky to be leading 1-0.  Early in the second, the Braves tied the game as a result of good ball movement and hard work in the offensive zone. Losing the lead for the first time this season seemed to wake the girls and drove them to find their earlier tournament form. Building off this new found energy, the girls continued scoring in the second and the third period ended up being one sided.   Without a stellar performance by the KW goalie the game could have ended much worse the final 5-1 for Peterborough.

Before the Bantam girls can focus on their next tournament in June in Whitby, there are 7 players who will be competing for spots at the last Team Ontario tryouts Friday June 1.
